Rory McIlroy has the golf media in a full-blown tizzy today after comments he made on the golf course during the final round of the Scottish Open. After hitting his approach shot left on number 16, a hot mic caught McIlroy crying out, “I’m so bad at golf!” The comment caused the media a great deal of consternation as it was correctly noted that if McIlroy is bad at golf then there is no hope for the rest of us.
What did not get reported, however, were comments the six-time major champion made during Thursday’s round. Had a hot mic been present on number nine after McIlroy executed a hugely difficult bunker shot that he spun back to inches from the hole, it would have picked up McIlroy pounding his chest and proclaiming, “I am so awesome at golf!”
Tournament organizers are considering adding additional hot mics after they failed to record McIlroy’s outburst on number 14 during the opening round. When McIlroy sent his drive to just a few feet from the hole on the par four, witnesses report that McIlroy flailed his fists and roared, “I am King Kong, bitch!”
Expect there to be hot mics aplenty as McIlroy makes his way around Royal Birkdale during this week’s Open Championship.
